Planet Forward, LLC, established in 2009, was created to enable existing buildings to  consume less energy and decrease utility costs by recommending upgrades with up to two-year returns on investment. Founders and co-owners Rod Gesten and Scott Irving have together over 50 years experience in the businesses of architecture, design, engineering, management and construction.  Together they developed the HEC ™Analysis (Patent Application 12/924,108), an web-based building energy diagnostic service.

To date, over 326 known versions of energy analysis software exist, creating a fragmented market with varied pricing structures. They promote “green building”, energy efficiency, renewable energy, sustainability”, but many are either salespeople for building system products or, worse, offer boiler plate recommendations for poorly performing buildings.

Today, over 4,859,000 commercial and 130,000,000 residential structures exist in the U.S., alone, with no apparent market leader in the energy diagnostics industry.  Utility bills consume 30% of monthly commercial operating expenses and 2-3 % of average residential budgets.  Most are without informed direction to implement changes or take advantage of rebates and tax credits that offset investments in certain energy upgrades.  Ironically, building commissioning is not widely performed because of perceived unjustified costs to commission energy analyses for structures.  Add to that a 40 year old industry that is still not collecting dependable data to base cost-effective recommendations and test the efficiency of modifications and you have an opportunity to fill a void.
